Scholarships

Application Deadline: March 1

Scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of demonstrated academic merit and potential for leadership. The SLIS Admissions and Scholarships Committee considers all applications for scholarships in the spring of each school year.  Applications are due in the School annually on March 1st.  Current students are notified of the deadline for scholarships and provided with an application via the School’s student email distribution list.  Students may seek additional financial aid opportunities offered by the University through the Financial Aid Office and the College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Awards. Additional scholarship information is made available to students through the School’s student email distribution list.

Most of the SLIS scholarships are for master's student, but there is one undergraduate scholarship and the application deadline is February 1.

Graduate Assistantships and Student Jobs (both grad and undergrad)

Graduate assistantships offer students practical experience which is excellent for resumes, they pay a montly rate, and assistantships of 20 hours per week waive tuition (not fees) for up to the number of hours required to finish the masters (the MLIS is 36 hours).

OU SLIS offers graduate assistantships on both the Norman and Tulsa campuses, For more information and applications for Norman GA's, click here and Tulsa positions click here

SLIS students are also hired in a variety of graduate assistantships and student jobs across campus.

External Funding and Job Opportunities

The American Library Association compiles an annual directory of awards from state library agencies, national and state library associations, local libraries, academic institutions, and foundations who give some form of financial assistance for undergraduate and/or graduate education programs in library and information studies. Please click here to access this directory.

Employment: Many SLIS master's students work in libraries around the region. Check the Oklahoma Department of Libraries Jobline for openings.

Finding a Career

MLIS students have access to the full set of services offered by the University Career Services Center, including assistance with resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.  Career Services also maintains internship and jobs posting boards and placement services. These services are available in person, or through email and videoconferencing.

Many library-focused position announcements from local and regional organizations are sent directly to the School.  We post these announcements on the SLIS-jobs listserve.  Current students are automatically subscribed to this email list.  If you are an alumni and would like to receive these emails, please contact Sarah Connelly in the SLIS offices 405.325-3921.
